Overview

What the migration involves

Condensed from the blog migration guide.

A Joomla to Payload migration makes sense when the reasons to leave are structural. The source guide is explicit that many Joomla sites should upgrade inside Joomla instead. A departure starts with an extension and template audit, because Joomla's real complexity lives in the extensions, templates, and custom pieces that make the site work. That inventory decides what can be dropped, what gets replaced, and what needs rebuilding.

If the site has outgrown Joomla's single-site content model, the move maps articles, categories, and custom fields to Payload collections defined in TypeScript. Content and media migrate through a script that reads from Joomla and writes through Payload's Local API, so malformed legacy data is caught during import. Joomla templates and extension output do not port; they are rebuilt as React components in a Next.js front end. Old URLs, metadata, canonical tags, and sitemaps are preserved with redirects and page-by-page QA.

Why WAYF

Who runs the migration

We are a Payload partner agency and a top contributor to the project. When something in the platform needs attention, we have direct access to the maintainers.

We have run this kind of move at enterprise scale. We migrated Ingersoll Rand's China sites off Oracle Content Manager in five months, with zero downtime at cutover, and we built the Council of Europe Development Bank's events platform to the deadline of their 70-year anniversary.

The first conversation is a free consultation. Scope, cost, and timing are agreed before any work starts.
