An Optimizely to Payload migration is really an unbundling exercise. Optimizely is a DXP, so the audit has to separate the content layer from the experimentation, personalization, commerce, and AI capabilities around it. A site that mostly uses Content Cloud is a content migration. A site running active experiments, personalization rules, and commerce catalogues is a broader composable rebuild, because Payload is a CMS and application platform, not a replacement DXP suite.
The content layer maps from Optimizely content types and blocks to Payload collections written in TypeScript. Content and media are moved through Payload's API, while Optimizely Razor or head-specific templates are reimplemented as React components in Next.js. Suite capabilities that remain in scope are wired to chosen tools; experiments and their history do not transfer. Old URLs receive redirects, and metadata, canonical tags, sitemaps, structured data, integrations, and Core Web Vitals are checked against the legacy site.
