Overview

What the migration involves

Condensed from the blog migration guide.

A WordPress to Payload migration runs as an ETL project. The existing site is first extracted into repeatable flat data, from WXR, the database, REST, or WooCommerce exports depending on what needs to move and what the source exposes. From there, each post type gets redesigned as a typed Payload collection instead of being carried over as posts plus postmeta. The migration keeps legacy IDs and old slugs during the move so relationships, media, taxonomies, and redirects can be resolved later.

What carries across is the content worth keeping, the media library, taxonomies, translated posts where the source site uses a multilingual plugin, and the old URL set. What gets rebuilt is the content model, the HTML-to-Lexical rich text transform, any block structure that replaces a single WordPress content blob, and the redirect map. The loader is built to be idempotent, so imports can run repeatedly before cutover without duplicating records.

Why WAYF

Who runs the migration

We are a Payload partner agency and a top contributor to the project. When something in the platform needs attention, we have direct access to the maintainers.

We have run this kind of move at enterprise scale. We migrated Ingersoll Rand's China sites off Oracle Content Manager in five months, with zero downtime at cutover, and we built the Council of Europe Development Bank's events platform to the deadline of their 70-year anniversary.
